About the song
I started this song while out on tour in recording at a studio at Fredonia State University of New York. I was always happy with the verse lyrics but not with the chorus. So the song just stayed in the notebook until the day that I heard friends were in the middle of a personal tragedy.
My college friend, a nurse, and her daughter came upon an accident while out driving on a cold winter day. They stopped to help, called 911 and got out to assess the status of the accident victims. An EMS worker came speeding to the "rescue" and hit them both, knocking them into a stone wall - killing the daughter instantly.
My friend lay in the start of a coma next to her dead daughter as melting water flowed down over the edges of the stones under them and on to the road and froze again to the road in a black ice slick.
She remained in that coma for almost 2 years and when she finally woke, she found that she had broken every bone in her body, legs, arms, ribs, back, head, jaw has lost many teeth and lost her daughter. I felt connected as a friend to the family and felt a personal loss like an uncle.
16 years earlier just when my friend wanted to have children, she found that her husband was gay and conception was a big issue. I talked to him and somehow managed to convince him to plant his seed anyway, and their beautiful daughter was born of this special love.. She was super smart and her passing was a loss from which no one will ever recover.
A personal aside, rescue people wake the fuck up. Obey the traffic laws on the way to he station, it is your duty and part of protecting the public safety.
II asked Anton Fig, drummer from the Paul Shaffer Band / Late Night with David Letterman to come to my studio to play on the song. He was happy for the chance to get out of NYC for a while and agreed. I was concerned that I would not be able to produce, engineer and play on the song all at the same time, so I asked my good friend David Ivory if he would take the reigns for the session with great results.
Debra called up the press and they came out to see us cut the song and later on the International Musicians Magazine did a Cover Story on us.
Anton Fig came back on another session to do the drums on the song Far Below track 08 on the Radiate CD.
